RSS – Necessary For Internet Marketing Success?

RSS – Most people run into this acronym when surfing the web and aren’t aware of what it means or what it does. The acronym RSS can stand for two different things: Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication. RSS is just a means of publicizing (syndication) updates about certain websites. It can contain the title, text summary or images. The ones that contain text summaries (Rich Site Summary) allows a quick view of the site, leaving the option to view it later. Direct links to the site are also present, which is why many refer to it as an RSS “feed.”

Netscape pioneered the idea of RSS when they wanted to let people have customizable home pages which could be tailored to the user’s interest by having links to pertinent web sites.

As far as it relates to Online Marketing, the very purpose of RSS feeds correlates with how the proficiency of a multi-level marketing business model is maximized. Users of RSS are able to customize their feeds from sites selling or sites informing about products or services they are particularly interested in. Online business owners will then benefit from receiving direct feed requests from potential customers in their particular niche market, allowing them to provide information and updates to their clients in real time. This increases their chances of building residual income exponentially.

Now, home-based business owners are using RSS for marketing products and services like never before. All the lucrative ones are connected via RSS to account providers, networking sites, news & information sites, organization sites and blogs. It is truly a technological advance in the communication, management and organization of information across the web. You can build a limitless network of clients and associates to maximize your ability to build residual income online, putting you directly on the path to personal and financial freedom.

How to Install Scripts on Your Website – 5 Steps

You don’t need to be a computer geek to be able to make your website do what you want. It doesn’t matter if you’re running a personal, non profit or internet business website, Just a few steps are needed to install 3rd party scripts and software on your website. After its installed, the controls are very intuitive and most 3rd party website software will allow you to control its functions through an easy to use web interface. So no programming is needed.

There are just a few simple steps needed to install and use website software (I can’t cover every different kind, but for most everyday scripts and software this will work).

1 – Identify which script you need and for what purpose. Get the files you need and any instructions that come with. Once again, you will not need to know how to code CGI or PHP to work with the scripts.

2 – Upload the files to your webserver. Identify a spot you want the script to reside if it is not already specified in the instruction s of your script.

3 – Edit 1 or more configuration files. Usually its just 1 file and all you need is your domain name, install directory (if it’s not in the root). The root directory is your “public_html” folder. And any MySQL Database info. When asked for your host, it’s usually “localhost” (without quoutes).

4 – login to the admin interface (webpages) and work with your script or software. All should be intuitive from this point.

5 – Test

Yes it takes a bit of work to make sure everything is installed and works correctly, but once it’s done once you’ll never have to do anything again, just use it. That is the beauty of website scripts and software.

Affiliate Marketing Guide To A Monthly Online Income

Creating an online affiliate marketing system which produces

a monthly income is relatively easy. With one catch, you

have to know exactly what you’re doing and how the whole

online marketing system works. Figuring out all the details

can take you years to learn.

What the beginning webmaster or marketer doesn’t realize

building a solid online business takes time and patience.

It is not done overnight, despite what the latest marketing

gurus are trying to sell you, it simply takes time and

a lot of hard work to build a solid online business.

First, you must have a basic understanding of how the

Internet works and the future role you will play in it.

You must understand the net is basically an extension

of the real world: it is an enormous virtual playground

as well as a vast storehouse of the world’s collective

knowledge. But you must also understand the web is a

global marketplace unlike anything that has been seen

before on this planet.

If you want to be an affiliate marketer you must place

yourself or your site into this whole online environment.

As an affiliate marketer you must play some sort of role

in the transfer of information within this complex structure.

How?

Simply give surfers what they’re looking for: information.

Supplying valuable, needed information is your key to

online affiliate success.

Here are some proven affiliate marketing strategies or tips

to get you started on your affiliate marketing career. Each

is a brief summation of some of the factors to keep in mind

as you create your own complex, yet simple, online marketing

system.

1. Acquiring Knowledge

Your first step is to acquire the basic skills and

knowledge needed to run an online site or business.

When I started I had to learn how to write HTML from

scratch and go from there… today there are many online

site builders and WYSIWYG editors to get you started.

Plus, you now have whole online site building systems

you can use, Ken Evoy’s SBI comes readily to mind.

No matter which route you follow, you must understand how

an online site works, how to use keywords, how to create

valuable content and how to tie in your affiliate links

with this content… all this basic knowledge you must

acquire.

2. Get The Big Picture: Your Role – Your Content

You must fully understand your role in the whole

online affiliate marketing process. Your content

must be valuable to the Internet user, it must

offer information, solve a problem or offer a

special deal. There must be some reason why the

surfer will use your site to find what they’re

looking for on the web. They must benefit in some

way from using your site.

Again, offering valuable, helpful information will

spell online affiliate success for you.

3. Build Your Foundation

You must have your own domain or domains. You must

create your own piece of virtual real estate that

you can build and gradually add to as you proceed.

Be wary of free sites. Don’t rent, own your real

estate outright. Your sites will become your valuable

properties you will continue to build for years

to come.

When picking a domain name try to get as close as you

can to the main keyword or keyword phrase represented

by your site’s topic. Use hyphens if you have to but

choose a name that is short and can be easily remembered

and typed directly into a browser.

As for site design and layout — a simple solution

is to use a blog format such as the free WordPress

software and host it on your own domain. Extremely

effective way of creating a full-powered content site

without having to worry about learning HTML code or

programing. You can have a website up and running

within minutes.

4. Know Your Partners & Their Products

As an affiliate marketer you will be selling other

people’s stuff. You must get to know these future

partners and their marketing systems. Pick affiliate

products directly related to the topic of your site.

Something your visitors are interested in and would

likely purchase after you have supplied them with

valuable information about those products.

A good way to find potential products and partners is

to join the well established major affiliate networks

on the web. These networks represents most of the Top 500

Companies in the world. Affiliate networks like Commission

Junction, LinkShare, Amazon, ClickBank, Shareasale…

these networks have been around for years and offer

excellent payment structures and commission rates.

5. Long Tail Keyword Marketing

Develop content and high rankings for long tail keyword

phrases related to your site’s topic. These are some of

the least competitive keywords yet they will also prove

to be the most lucrative for you. Find the long tail

keywords within your niche and exploit them. Using exact

brand names of the affiliate products you’re promoting

make for effective long tail keywords.

Consistently use and develop this long tail keyword

strategy and you will succeed at affiliate marketing.

6. Build Your One-Way Links

Take a pro-active approach to link building. Don’t sit

around waiting for links, instead go out and get them.

Use your keyword anchor links in the resource box of your

articles. Distribute these articles to all the major

article directories… make sure EzineArticles.com,

Goarticles.com, ArticleAlley.com… are on your list.

Recommend products that you use, make forum posts,

create viral videos, join social media sites, offer

a free newsletter and build your own subscriber base,

create follow-up autoresponder series on the major

products you promote… these are all ways of creating

traffic and customers.

7. Embrace Google But Don’t Ignore the Others

Embrace Google as if your affiliate marketing life

depended on it — chances are it will be!

Google is the search engine that you must optimize for

if you want your site to really succeed online. Don’t

ignore the others, but Google has become the most

popular search engine in the world and even accounts

for 50% of all the searches made in the USA. (comScore)

So short of a brown-nose, do everything you can to please

Google. The rewards are worth it. Whether you’re a Google

fan or not, Google has gained the trust and respect of

the majority of Internet users. Getting a top 10 placement

for your targeted keywords will often mean money in the bank.

8. Be Aware Of The Social Media Revolution

Be aware the Internet is constantly changing and in the

next few years everything will be turned topsy-turvy. We

are talking about the growing popularity of user-generated

content sites such as MySpace, FaceBook, YouTube, Digg,

Technorati…

Stay within the flow by making sure any site you create

has a blog and RSS feed attached to it. Make sure all

your content can be easily bookmarked in all these

different social bookmarking sites. One simple solution

is to use the easy bookmarking system supplied by

Addthis.com, place their code on your content pages

and let your visitors bookmark your content for you

in all these different media sites.

9. Model It

In art one of the best ways to learn is to model

or copy the masters. You learn by seeing how

someone else has approached and solved a problem

and then use their model or example. In affiliate

marketing, one of the best ways to learn is to

copy or model your business on one that has already

been proven to work.

This is NOT literal copying of a site or business

but simply modeling your own business on an existing

example that works. Same structure, same marketing

techniques, same principles… building your affiliate

business on an existing mold or model is a wise

route to take if you want to succeed.

10. Be Patient For Results

Building a viable online affiliate business takes some

time so be patient. If you’re building a content rich

site and targeting specific keywords it can take months,

sometimes even years, before you obtain significant

results. So have long term goals in place and expect

plenty of hard work before you reap the real rewards.

Just remember becoming a full time online affiliate

marketer is well within anyone’s reach. However, like

most things in life, the journey is always much more

enjoyable than your final destination. Many of you will

probably discover, like I did, that ‘the reach is the

grasp’. Actually doing something is the main reward,

all those monthly affiliate checks are just pleasant

aftershocks. Very nice aftershocks that add up very

quickly into a healthy monthly online income!

New Internet Marketing Tools

New Internet marketing tools are coming online each

and every day. Why should you care? Mainly because

these new marketing tools can have a dramatic impact

on your online traffic, leads and sales. So much so,

your online competitiveness can greatly depend on you

finding and using these new marketing tools before

everyone else does.

And as Internet marketing grows more and more lucrative,

it is becoming more competitive each day, so staying

aware of what’s happening has become vital to your

online success. More importantly, if you’re a full-time

marketer like me, your livelihood will largely depend

upon you being able to keep on top of all the new ways

of marketing on the web. With these considerations in

mind, I would like to list some new or relatively new

marketing tools that have been effective for me in my

online marketing. Some of these are marketing software,

others are SEO strategies, marketing tips and the like…

all have helped me achieve my online goals.

Here are some new marketing tools you can try:

1. Real Link Finder

Neil Shearing’s “RealLinkFinder” is a handy little

link-building tool you can use to increase your link

popularity and SE rankings.

It lets you find targeted blogs that don’t have

the “nofollow” attribute tag so your links will count

in all the search engines. Great way to build targeted

links related to your site’s main keywords or keyword

phrases. This is one “No Cost” link-building tool you

should try: reallinkfinder.com

2. Peel Away Ads

Simple ads which sit at the corner of any webpage,

when a cursor hovers over the pulsating image, the page

peels away to reveal your ad or promotion. Might seem a

bit gimmicky, but like the pop-up or fade-in, they do work.

You do get more sign-ups and sales – pealawayads.com

3. Video Marketing

Using videos as marketing tools has now become commonplace

on the web. If you’re not promoting with videos, you are

losing a large portion of the online traffic or surfers

currently on the web.

Even using videos to explain your site or product will

increase your conversions and sign-ups. Viral videos

embedded with your links or site url can produce results

when placed on YouTube or Google Videos. If you need help,

one recent commercial product has been from Simon Grabowski

(GetResponse) called TalkStream, which lets you put streaming

audio and video on your sites. Just Google to find it.

4. Social Media Bookmarks/Tags

One of the most significant changes in recent years has

been the rise in importance and use of social bookmarking

sites like Digg, Del.icio.us, Technorati… these sites are

now commanding huge traffic numbers and should not be ignored

in your online marketing.

You must connect your content with these sites. This is very

simple to do since social media sites use tags, which are more

or less simple keywords that help classify content and links.

If you’re using the popular Wordpress blog software, each

category will be considered a tag.

You can create a simple tag in technorati by using this code:

[tagname]new marketing tools

Remove the *asterisks in actual codes.

5. Add this Button

One of the easiest ways I have found to tap into the whole

social media bandwagon is to put the Addthis button on your

webpages and let your visitors bookmark your content for you.

This button is free and only takes seconds to set up on your

pages. In case you’re wondering if this button works, I recently

received 70,000 visitors to one of my sites in one day from these

social media sites. Granted most of this traffic is transitory

and not permanent — the huge traffic numbers will only last as

long as your links/bookmarks are on the front pages of these

popular sites.

But where there is smoke, you can make fire.

6. Blogs RSS Feeds

Likewise, you must have a blog and RSS Feed associated with

your site or product. It is vital that you take advantage of

this technology to get your content broadcasted across the

web and around the world.

RSS is only simple code that syndicates your content to

all interested parties; it originally stood for “Rich Site

Summary” and was a way of summarizing your content and

broadcasting it. Most people now refer to RSS as Really

Simple Syndication. You need a “newsreader” or aggregator

such as Newsgator, Google Reader, My Yahoo! or Feed Demon

to access all your feeds.

One little blog traffic tool I find helpful is John Reese’s

BlogRush, which helps syndicate your blog posts on other blogs. Just Google to find it.

7. Expert Marketing

Another effective way to market online or off is to

promote/prove yourself as an expert in your chosen field.

Creating articles, ebooks, websites on a subject that

interests you will make you an expert. Once you gain

credibility as an expert, your marketing will become

much easier.

Some obvious places to help build this credibility would

be EzineArticles, SelfGrowth, Ideamarketers… I have found

these places are excellent for getting your name and your

content noticed.

8. Long Tail Niche Marketing

One of the most effective ways to market online is to

use long tail keywords in your niche market. This simply

means instead of targeting very general and very

competitive keywords, you target less competitive

long tail keywords in a smaller niche market.

I have found this tactic especially good for affiliate

marketing, and the trick is to find the exact long tail

phrase someone is using in the search engines and then

construct content/url to match it. I find Brad Callen’s

Keyword Elite software program extremely helpful in

finding those long tail keywords.

9. Guru Fast-track

One of the fastest and quickest ways to earn large amounts

online is to hook up with big marketing gurus and use their

huge contact lists. If you have a high quality info product,

then JVs (joint ventures) with these savvy marketers can

be a very viable option for you to try.

These marketing gurus or experts are valuable marketing

tools you can use to your advantage. Granted, their

aggressive marketing methods do turn many people off,

but there’s no denying their methods do work.

10. Micro-List Marketing

Micro-List Building is one of the most effective online

marketing tools you can use. Quite frankly, I have found

building a large opt-in list is not the real key to online

wealth but instead creating small micro lists for each of

your promoted products to be much more effective. You can

have hundreds, even thousands of these different micro-lists.

Use an unlimited autoresponder program like Aweber to handle

and manage all these lists.

Studies have shown interested customers may not buy on the

first visit, that it may take up to six or seven reminders.

So keeping in contact with an interested customer, one who

is looking and in the right mindset to buy, will definitely

increase your sales.

Here, rather then the hard-sell, the emphasis should be on

collecting contacts in order to give them helpful informative

content on the product they’re interested in buying. Supplying

quality content should be your main goal; let the selling take

care of itself. If you get the first part right, the sale will

come naturally.

In conclusion, you must remember when dealing with such a

complex creature as Internet marketing, in most cases there’s

no one single marketing tool that will do the job. Instead you

need a whole orchestra of tools working together in order to

make your online marketing the most effective. So why not try

some of these tools in your own online marketing and see the

results for yourself. You have everything to gain.

RSS Marketing Explained

Many internet marketers are slow to recognize the importance of RSS feeds and the potential it has for delivering targeted and ‘wanted’ traffic to their sites. Just like a traditional newsletter, subscribers must opt-in to get the feed. Once subscribed to the RSS Feed, they’ll automatically be updated as you add new content to your site. A lot of visitors, especially Bloggers, see feeds as a very practical and convenient way to stay informed and keep track of their favorite sites.

What is RSS?

RSS is the acronym for ‘Really Simple Syndication’ and it’s basically the standard of syndication for websites to use to syndicate their content. A RSS feed generally needs a reader or aggregator to see it.

The subscriber’s point of view

Why would someone want to subscribe to a feed when they need a special reader to see it? First, if a site visitor really likes your site and doesn’t want to miss what’s coming next, subscribing to the RSS feed is the perfect solution. Now they can enjoy new posts, articles and content just as fast as it goes online. Surfing via RSS reader saves time by eliminating the need to visit each site individually. Second, many visitors are concerned with their privacy and really aren’t crazy about adding yet another newsletter to their already overflowing inbox. Of course, you can and should offer your feed by email but the option of getting your content sent to their reader appeals to many.

The benefits of syndicating your site include driving more traffic to your website, increasing your search engine ranking and it’s very low cost. So low cost, in fact, it’s free. Perhaps the best reason to use RSS marketing is it builds relationships. Nothing is more powerful in marketing than a large group of dedicated readers/buyers that like your brand and feel comfortable with you. You can use RSS feeds to earn the trust of your subscribers and that in turn will convert some of them to buyers. Your feed can also be placed on other websites. A webmaster just adds your feed to an aggregator and your feed will show on their website. Can you ask for any more?

List building

Every marketer understands the importance of list building and email marketing. Your RSS subscribers are indeed another valuable list. Whether they subscribe to your feed by email or in a reader, your marketing message is getting out. I don’t want to just breeze over the list aspect because this is big! Some of the top blogs have a feed subscriber counts well over half a million. Now that,s a big list by anyone’s standard.

With RSS feeds, you don’t have to worry about spam complaints, spam filters, IPS blocking, blacklisting or unsubscribes. I’m not suggesting you abandon your traditional list or the idea of building traditional lists. You should use both. Both methods compliment one another and building a subscriber base from both list building methods will increase your reach and strengthen your brand faster.

Best bet

The quickest and easiest way to get started with your own RSS feed is to start a blog. Blogs by design are already ‘fitted’ for RSS feeds and they’re very easy to start and maintain. Once you have your blog and feed setup the way you want you can concentrate on quality content. Blogs are interactive websites that are very user friendly as well as search engine magnets. You can start your own blog and host it free on a number of sites such as WordPress and Blogger.

A few quick tips

The fastest way to learn about RSS feeds is by subscribing to some yourself. Be careful, it’s very addicting.

Submit your RSS feed to the RSS directories. Just like blog and article directories, there are quality RSS directories you can add your feed to.

Trade subscriptions. Have your online friends subscribe to yours and you subscribe to theirs. Remember networking? It’s still important.

One trick I learned from the pros is to link your images to their actual URL. Many readers won’t show the graphics in the feed so having a clickable link is a nice touch. That way the subscriber can simply click the link to see the image.

Give your articles descriptive titles. When scanning posts in the reader or email, most will skip what doesn’t look interesting.

Subscribe to yourself. The best way to see what they see is by subscribing to your own feeds. Understand that not all readers and email clients are created equal.

Get it right the first time. Before you hit that publish button make sure everything is correct. Check links, spelling and everything else. Once it goes out it’s out and too late to change it.

Marketing of Commercial Properties

Understanding Today’s Commercial Market.

There is a global economic slow down, which in turn has effected the commercial real estate market world wide and in India too, (although there are signs of improvement now), the reasons of this slow down are many, however it is important to know some of the important factors. As large financial corporations announced and declared bankrupt, the expected returns on investments were washed away forcing companies and large retailers to cut costs, and hold up future expansion plans, resulting in job losses and unemployment. In other words corporations and large retailers preferred to stay afloat and remain alive than sink in the slow market conditions. This resulted in drying up the demand of commercial properties; however the supply of up coming commercial continued and hit the market. The supply exceeded the demand.

Commercial Real Estate Effected.

1. Real estate market crashed

2. Demand for commercial properties almost dried up

3. Stock market portfolios /shares of large reputed developers crashed

4. Investors not lost confident in real estate

5. Banks and financial institutions stopped financial support to developers

6. Large percentage of vacancies created in existing commercial properties

7. Need for commercial property prices corrections, (rentals and sales)

8. Developers sandwiched between bank / financial credits and defaults of investors.

Know the Market.

It is time of real estate consultants and brokering firms to analyse and study the market situation from time to time and implement a workable marketing plan for increasing sales and targeting potential customers.

Simple problems.

What should a brokering firm do with a commercial real estate property and multiple tenants, especially when that office / retail space of your client is lying vacant, you are not just not making money but losing it, over and above paying those overhead costs while your commercial space is vacant definitely eats into your profit margin.

Cost Effective Marketing Solutions.

Internet technology is a powerful cost effective marketing business tool today, large and small corporations, brands, individuals, investors from not only the local neighbourhood but across the globe search for information related to all kinds of property offers. Real estate brokering firms and consultants can market their listings and services through this channel by having the following.

1. Well designed and informative web site available on the search engines

2. List the properties through a large number of property portals at the national and international levels

3. List articles on forums, blogs, twitter etc, updating inform over the web

4. Maintain a regular presence on the social networking sites

5. Create a e-mailing data base to tap new clients and up date your old clients

6. Maintain a data for various category of clients

7. Be assessable by your clients

This involves very less costs and is effective as 90% of buyers and prospective tenants search the internet for real estate services and related properties.

Other marketing Tools.

1. Advertisements listings with local and national news papers

2. Distribution of promotional publications at up coming property sites to potential buyers

3. Fixing up and meeting proposed corporate clients and sharing information

4. Building personal relations with new developers for better business relations

5. Customer care for previous clients, giving them lucrative offers on new products

Advertisements in news papers costs INR 20000/ month (small adds) Promotional information is available through developers free of cost, PR relations can be built by face to face contact or through telephones, video conferencing (marginal operational cost)

Offering Extra Benefits to New Clients.

Offer your extra quality and personalised real estate services to potential new clients to remain loyal to your company, give credit facility to privileged customers, discounted real estate service charges, care for your clients whether old or new. Make them feel that a brokering firm is an essential part of the property transaction.

Know your Competitors.

Real estate like all other business also has competition, keep a check on your direct competitors, there strategies, method of operations, maintain a intelligence network to gain superiority in the market. Remain up dated with the latest news on commercial and retail property in your neighbour hood

Net Work with Reliable Agents and developers

Maintain a strong network with reliable and trust worthy real estate firms, categorise each agent according to his specialty in the field of real estate, share the basic out line of your listings with them to push sales through them.

Kindle Reader Review – Amazon’s Wireless Reading Device

Amazon’s popular wireless reading device, the Kindle reader, is the most widely available ebook reader on the market, being accessible to people in 175 countries worldwide.

If you are new to e-readers, the Kindle reader is similar in size to a regular DVD case, but thinner, and weighs 289 grams. It has a built-in wireless modem that allows for downloading ebooks, newspapers, and magazines directly to the device itself. The wireless service is free and doesn’t require any monthly payments or roaming charges. Because of this, you don’t have to use a computer to download your books, although you have that option if you prefer it.

The Kindle reader uses a technology called electronic paper that mimics the look of a printed book, giving it a high contrast ratio with rich, dark text. It is very easy on the eyes unlike bright LCD computers and phones, and is readable in direct sunlight. Another benefit of this technology is that it’s extremely energy-efficient; a battery will hold a charge for roughly 7,500 page-turns, or 2 weeks of regular reading.

The majority of countries have access to over 400,000 ebooks from the online Kindle store. Most new release and bestseller ebooks cost $9.99 in the US and $11.99 everywhere else, with the exception of the countries in the EU, where an additional 15% VAT is applied to ebook purchases.

A nice perk with Amazon, they allow you to download a sample of any book for free so you can read the beginning to see if you like it or not. And the Kindle reader comes with 2 GB of memory to hold about 1,500 ebooks and personal documents.

In addition to ebooks, Kindle International owners have access to several dozen international newspaper and magazine subscriptions that are far cheaper than their paper cousins. Here are some newspapers Kindle users can expect to receive wirelessly each morning: The Times, Daily Mail, The Independent, The Daily Telegraph, Le Monde, Les Echos, Frankfurter Allgemeine, Handelsblatt, The Irish Times, El País, Diariocritico, AS, Corriere Della Sera, and La Stampa.

Aside from Amazon, there are a number of websites that have free, non-DRM protected ebooks that will work on a Kindle just fine. Some examples are Project Gutenberg, Feedbooks, and Baen’s free library. Another website, MobiPocket, has nearly 10,000 free English ebooks along with approximately 100 free German language ebooks, 700 French, 275 Finnish, 170 Dutch, and several other languages too.

Additionally, the Kindle reader will play music and is compatible with audiobooks from Audible.

The new International Kindle e-readers have a global AT&T modem that can pick up a free wireless signal in over 100 counties. This includes access to Wikipedia, and a few countries have free internet with the Kindle’s experimental web browser, but because of current cellular bandwidth issues and increased wireless costs abroad it’s not available everywhere.

Here’s the complete country list and wireless coverage map for the Kindle Reader, along with some additional resources.

Create Your RSS Feed Slideshow Using A New Revolutionary Gadget!

The popularity and effectiveness of RSS feeds as powerful marketing tools is a fact that cannot be denied. Almost immediately after its introduction and distribution among hordes of eager internet users, online RSS feeds were implemented throughout most the different levels of the online world.

Millions of internet users have subscribed to RSS feeds in order to automatically receive relevant news and information directly to their homepages, thereby eliminating the need to spend precious time seeking out that same information. There is hardly a blog writer out there who hasn’t embedded one of the leading RSS directories into their blogs and even Ezines used RSS feeds as their “daily news” for some time.

RSS feeds for picture galleries is another technology that has been around for a while. Websites like Photobucket, Flicker and Picasa have been providing their users with advanced RSS feed features like: “latest pictures from all albums”, “album pictures”, “album pictures” and even RSS feeds to all of a user’s album thumbnails. However, users were faced with difficulties whenever there was a need to create a new picture gallery or update new pictures into existing galleries – while pictures could be embedded into a slideshow, any new picture galleries that were created or pictures that were updated had to be separately updated into RSS feed slideshows.

The next stage in the evolution of RSS feeds for picture galleries will offer interactive, personalized features allowing users to tailor their slideshows specifically to their liking. Pictures will be available for download and even sale – directly from the RSS feed slideshows!

A variety of innovative and user friendly gadgets have been released that solve the problem of separate updates for slideshows. One such gadget, based on the latest Ajax feeds API technology, was recently provided by Google open source. The gadget is simple to use: All you have to do is paste the RSS URL of the picture album you would like to create as a slideshow into the gadget box, give it a title, preview it, GET the code and paste it into your OTHER web presences such as blog, site, social page, or into your igoogle page.

The benefits offered by this new technology are undeniable:

o It will automatically display your latest pictures from your original gallery

o It will LINK to your gallery, your disciplined server/messenger, and you’ll only have to make the update once.

o It will be added to your igoogle page.

The gadget is just the tip of the iceberg of an application to be announced in a couple of weeks. Currently the gadget which can be found at -RSS Slideshow gadget- only supports Picasa, Flicker and Photobucket feeds. To date the best image resolution is via Picasa feeds but in a matter of days image resolution will be enhanced for the other pictures as well.

Nuke Designers is an experienced, innovative and cutting-edge graphic design company specializing in the creation of highly attractive and efficient skins and templates specifically for use on dotnetnuke websites.

You can see the demo for the slideshow gadget live at :nukedesigners.com or just go and do it at: RSS slideshow gadget.

RSS Feeds – A Website Owner’s Friend in Disguise

We’ve all heard about it-it seems like all the buzz right now in the search engine marketing industry is RSS. If you’re a website owner, than there are two ways your website can benefit from using RSS on your website-you can provide an RSS feed or, for the not-so-technically-inclined folks like me, you can use an RSS feed to keep your site’s content fresh.

RSS is a way to syndicate website content. According to Wikipedia, “RSS is a family of XML file formats for web syndication used by (amongst other things) news websites and weblogs…the RSS formats provide web content or summaries of web content together with links to the full versions of the content, and other meta-data.” Wikipedia goes on to say that “A program known as a feed reader or aggregator can check RSS-enabled web pages on behalf of a user and display any updated articles that it finds. It is now common to find RSS feeds on major web sites, as well as many smaller ones.”

If you’re a website owner, you can use RSS to your advantage in two ways: use someone else’s RSS feed or produce your own RSS feed. 1. Install a script on your website-whenever a web page on your website is loaded the script automatically loads data from an RSS feed. If the RSS feed you choose to use is the latest news, then the latest news will appear on your website. This is fairly easy to set up and is good for search engine optimization purposes. I’ll discuss installing an RSS feed script on your website later on in this article.

2. Provide an RSS feed of your website’s content so others can use it. By providing an RSS feed of your website’s content, you’re essentially allowing people to use the content on their website or through their feed reader. In either case, you’re also providing links back to your website, which is good for search engine optimization purposes-it will also get visitors to visit your website. Providing an RSS feed of your site’s content can be tricky to set up-or it may not be appropriate if you don’t have a lot of content on your website. I’ll discuss your options later on in this article.

If you’re a website owner, then chances are you want to keep your website’s content fresh. By updating the content on a regular basis, the search engine spiders will take notice-they’ll visit your website more often and index the new content and new web pages-which can ultimately bring more visitors to your website. For example, if your website is about real estate, you might consider including the latest real estate news on your website. Users typically search for topics that are related to items in the news, so if those topics and keywords are included on your website you can typically be found in the search engines for those terms. It’s like having your own real estate news staff on hand, 24 hours a day, adding the latest news on your website.

Installing an RSS Feed on Your Website

Installing an RSS feed on your website is not as difficult as it sounds. You simply install a script one time-and then anywhere you want the RSS feed to appear you simply pick a feed and copy and paste some code on your page. The first thing you need to do is figure out which script to use. If your website is using an Unix server and has PHP installed, the the easiest PHP script I’ve found is called CaRP. You will first want to visit the CaRP download page and download the file. CaRP has a free version that you can use on your website. They request that you link back to their website if you use it. Unzip the zip file and upload the files to your website using an FTP program. Then, run the setup file in your web browser, chmod the appropriate files, and continue with the directions given to you in the web browser. Once it’s installed, the script will give you code to copy and paste wherever your want the RSS feed to be displayed on your website. You can even change the font, size, and color of the feed by specifying those attributes before the code.

There are other RSS parser scripts available, but CaRP is the one that I’m more familiar with because its ease of use and ease of installation. To find other RSS parsers, you can search Google for “rss parser script”. CaRP is typically used if you have PHP installed on your website, and RSS parser scripts are available if you’re running a website on a Windows server. If you’re using the PHP version of CaRP then you’ll want to use PHP pages on your website-or you will need to parse your html pages as PHP pages.

Finding an RSS Feed

Once you’ve installed the parser script, you’ll want to find the appropriate RSS feed to use on your website. Keep in mind that a lot of RSS feeds are provided for “non-commercial use only”, so if your website is a for-profit website you’ll need to check the terms of using the RSS feed before you use it.

The best way to find an RSS feed is to search for it. Following my real estate example above, searching for “rss real estate” (without the quotes) finds several feeds. Topix.net provides a real estate rss feed. By copying that URL and pasting it into the CaRP code provided by CaRP, you can add that code to any web page on your website and the latest Real Estate News from Topix will automatically appear. Another way to find a feed is to look for a blog on your site’s topic. Most blog software includes an RSS feed, so searching Google for “keyword blog rss” might also help you find a feed you can use.

Adding an RSS feed on your web page won’t get you high rankings in the search engines. A while back I tested this theory a while back by making three nearly identical web pages-one static page, one with RSS feed content on it, and another with a live RSS feed on it. It turned out that after all three pages were indexed and ranked, the page with the live RSS feed actually ranks third-the static page without the RSS content on it always ranks the best. Search Google for “silly burlywood revenue” and you’ll see what I mean.

Although adding an RSS feed won’t get your page top rankings in Google, there are other benefits. For example, updating your web page’s content on a regular basis gets the page crawled more often-and more active crawling can contribute to other benefits, such as ranking for terms that appear in the feed on your site as well as causing new web pages on your site to get indexed faster than they were before.

Providing an RSS Feed of Your Content

Depending on your website’s content, providing an RSS feed of your content might be appropriate. If your website provides news or contains a blog, then publishing an RSS feed might work well. Most blog software automatically publishes an RSS feed of your blog, so you might want to find its URL and start promoting it. If you sell a lot of products on your website, you might consider making an RSS feed available-perhaps one that includes your top selling products along with their prices. Other websites might be interested in publishing that data for their users, and you would receive more visitors and links back to your website, something that will help your site’s search engine rankings.

Publishing an RSS feed is a little more complicated, perhaps to lengthy a discussion for this article. However, there are many good tutorials out there, including Danny Sullivan’s Search Engine Watch article about it, as well as the RSS tutorial at mnot.net.

Whether you use RSS to publish your own feed or you use someone else’s feed on your website, both provide great benefits to website owners-and definitely will continue in the future to be used more and more.

Should You Buy an eBook Reader?

Books have been around in their current form for a very long time and have, thus far, proved resistant to technological changes. The basic concept of a book today is very much the same as it was a hundred years ago. Now, however, it looks like technology may have eventually found a better format for enjoying the written word – or has it?

A simple idea in principle, electronic book readers, or eBook readers as they are commonly known, provide the facility to store entire book collections in a package smaller than a traditional paperback; and the facility to read and enjoy books wherever and whenever you like.

How do they work?

E-book readers store books in a digital format, much the same way as a computer stores written documents, and use a microprocessor to deliver the text to an LCD display screen. Users can scroll through the text, page by page, create digital bookmarks, adjust the size of the text, look up unfamiliar words with a built-in dictionary and even listen to music with integrated MP3 players.

Perhaps the reason why e-book readers have become a realistic proposition just now is the advent of the display technology? Anyone who has spent time in front of a computer monitor can attest that reading text can be a little wearing after a while. With the new bread of e book readers this is addressed by the use of electronic ink technologies which give the text on-screen an appearance which is very similar to traditional paper.

Another benefit is that many electronic book readers have back-lit screens which enable you to read comfortably when light levels are low – something which is obviously very difficult with the traditional book.

Book titles can be purchased on-line and downloaded via a PC instantly. The Kindle book reader, developed by Amazon, allows you to download e-books and electronic versions of newspapers wirelessly, wherever you are, in an instant. Which means an end to queuing in book stores, or waiting for books to be delivered by post.

So what’s not to like?

Obviously e-books are not for everyone and some people will still prefer the tactile feel of a traditional book with the ability to build up a traditional collection. Another benefit, of course, is that traditional books don’t need batteries and if you inadvertently leave your latest John Gresham novel on the train it’s not such a big deal as losing an expensive electronic device?

Also, as with most emerging technologies, there are currently several formats available and it’s not easy to predict which will dominate the market. Some e-book readers are fully compatible with PDF and Word documents, while others use their own unique formats. This could be important as anyone opting for the wrong device could find a severe shortage of book titles available in the future?

All in all though, it’s difficult not to appreciate the benefits offered by electronic book readers. More and more titles are being released every day, and the advent of electronic newspaper subscriptions may be a strong selling point alone; particularly as some publishers are rumoured to be considering giving away e-book readers to their subscribers in the future?

What to look for?

If you have decided that you want to buy an eBook reader then here are a few points to consider:

Screen size – typically screen sizes average 6″ which tends to be more than adequate. Some devices are offered in larger formats which may suit some but think twice about buying an e book reader with a smaller screen. They may be cheaper but could prove uncomfortable to read after a while? Look also at the number of grey scales which the display uses – the higher the number – the better the quality of print.

Battery Life – usually measured in page turns and tends to be quite good. Overall, book readers have low energy consumption unless the back-light is used continuously.

Storage Capacity – this can vary quite a lot and is worth comparing like-for-like. Some machines offer additional memory capacity by use of SD memory cards (as used in digital cameras) which may be worth considering?

Supported formats – another area where there can be discrepancies – ideally you’ll want a reader which supports common formats – if not directly, then via some form of conversion facility.

Whether eBooks become as commonplace as predicted remains to be seen, but anyone who enjoys reading will benefit from the freedom these devices offer. Electronic books could well be the future of reading the written word?

Electronic book readers are available to buy from all leading on-line and traditional retailers. Whichever eBook Reader you chose there are a wealth of eBook Titles to choose from, including best selling fiction from many of the leading authors.
